A Comprehensive and Ethical Approach to Pain Management

This one day workshop introduces an integrative and comprehensive approach to pain management.

This course adopts western practices and a unique form of documentation to improve assessment and patient communication when using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat pain. Participants are introduced to algometry and complete patient surveys to assess pain and suffering. Goniometry and western muscle palpation are explored. Participants are introduced to patient-centered SMART notes (based on SMART goals) to improve patient communication, compliance and clinical documentation of TCM strategy. This course includes a review of ethics and ethical issues when treating pan. It concludes with a discussion of resolving such conflicts.

Lawrence Howard, DAc, Dipl Ac (NCCAOM), brings a wealth of hands-on experience to his role as an educator in pain management. With a distinguished career as a New York State licensed acupuncturist that spans over two decades, he has honed his expertise in a multitude of multidisciplinary clinics, dedicating his practice to the intricate art of alleviating pain. His tenure as a Subject Matter Expert for the NCCAOM and a former instructor and clinic supervisor at the New York College of Health Professions underscores his depth of knowledge and his commitment to advancing the practice of pain relief.

Dr. Howard's passion for teaching is invigorated by his extensive clinical background and his drive to integrate a broad spectrum of non-TCM disciplines into his courses. His approach to education is underpinned by a desire to meld Western science, psychology, and philosophy to offer a holistic and ethically sound perspective on pain management.
